New project on knit production and skill in Shetland and the west of Ireland

I’m delighted to have been awarded a Carnegie Trust Research Incentive Grant for the not-so-snappily named ‘Micro-manufacturing and place-based maker cultures: textile production and skill transmission in Shetland and the west of Ireland’.

The project focuses on small-scale knit textile manufacturing in Shetland and the west of Ireland. I’ll be investigating how people who work with and design for machinery understand and transmit ‘skill’ within wider ‘maker cultures’ (Carr and Gibson 2016) that celebrate the idea of the handcrafted.

Looking forward to learning a lot more about all the small producers in these parts!
